Join Niki Sharma, B.C.’s Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development and Non-Profits, in her keynote address as she looks back at the first year in her role as B.C.’s first parliamentary secretary dedicated to non-profits. Niki will also discuss how non-profits have been navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and how the sector continues to be essential to B.C.’s economic recovery.

We are all on a journey of learning, understanding, grieving, and growing. Reconciliation and healing is complicated but there is a way to move forward, one foot in front of the other, one hand reaching out to another. Many non-Indigenous Canadians are trying to figure out how we can support, act, change. This workshop will explore ideas and actions that staff and volunteers in non-profit organizations can consider as we respond to the Calls to Action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We will consider the importance of staying local, developing authentic relationships and taking time, as we build understanding and develop practices and policies that can lead to respectful and healthy relationships.

This topic has been around for decades. It is an area that has taken on the spotlight as we continue to move forward in our daily lives and during these uncharted times. 2021 has been a challenging year for not-for-profit organizations. This session with staff from the Gaming Branch will provide updates to the current situation, a look to the future and a Q&A session where participants can ask questions that concerns the sector and their own organization.

The nature of digital engagement is constantly evolving and this begs the question: what role does digital play in spreading your message and are you utilizing the best tools and strategies to reach your target audiences?

The Cybersecurity For Nonprofits session will explore cybersecurity domains and the role nonprofits play in the rising threat landscape. Particular emphasis will be placed on cybersecurity education and awareness, the protection of critical data, privacy, and compliance (PII, HCI, PCI, SOX). Lisa will provide basic steps organizations can take to lower risk and enhance security posture.

Creating a culturally welcoming volunteer program involves more than just implementing a sound volunteer cycle management. Culturally welcoming volunteer programs are embedded in a clear understanding of the cross-cultural adjustment processes newcomers often experience in a new culture and an in-depth application of the principles of EDI and Anti-Racism all all stages of your strategic planning process.

This session is a hand-on practice where participants will be invited to reflect on a case study and apply the culturally welcoming volunteer program tool which is summarized by the following premise: “A culturally welcoming organization is an outcome. Cultural competency is a skill set: A set of behaviors, attributes and policies enabling an agency (or individual) to work effectively in cross cultural situations”.
